When browsing isn’t active, ChatGPT is limited to what it learned during training, which is frozen at a specific point in time and doesn’t update on its own.

This is a meaningful distinction because the two modes can produce very different answers to the same question. Asked about a fast-moving topic without browsing, ChatGPT might describe outdated information as if it were current, simply because that’s what its training data reflects.

Why Language Models Need a Separate Browsing Tool

A large language model like the one behind ChatGPT is trained on a large body of text up to a certain point, and that training process essentially “bakes in” patterns and facts as of that cutoff. The model itself has no ongoing connection to the internet as part of its core design — generating text is a separate process from fetching live data. To give ChatGPT the ability to answer questions about current events or fast-changing facts, OpenAI built browsing as an additional tool the model can invoke: it formulates a search, retrieves results, and reads relevant pages, then incorporates what it finds into its answer.

This tool-use approach is why browsing responses often come with visible citations or links — the model is explicitly showing its work by pointing to where the information came from, rather than presenting it as something it simply “knew.”

When Browsing Matters Most

The difference is clearest with time-sensitive questions. Asking ChatGPT “what’s the weather right now” or “what happened in the news this week” requires current data that only browsing can provide; without it, the model either can’t answer meaningfully or risks giving a stale, misleading response. By contrast, a question like “explain how photosynthesis works” doesn’t need real-time data at all, since the underlying facts don’t change day to day — training knowledge alone is sufficient.

Because browsing adds a retrieval step, it can also be slower than an answer generated purely from the model’s training. That trade-off is generally worth it when accuracy on current information matters, and less necessary for stable, general-knowledge questions.
